About J-1 Visa

Exchange Visitor (J) visas are nonimmigrant visas for individuals approved to participate in exchange visitor programs in the United States.
The objective of J-1 Exchange Visitor Program (EVP) is "to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchanges that assist in the development of peaceful relations." [Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act (Fulbright-Hayes Act) of 1961]
The legislation was enacted into law by the president John F. Kennedy on September 21, 1961.
